Osteoarthritis Stem Cell Treatment in Clinical Trial

The transplantation of stem cells into areas affected by osteoarthritis allow lost cartilage tissue to regenerate.

In recent clinical trials, researchers at the National University of Ireland Galway have successfully utilized adult stem cells to treat patients with osteoarthritis.  The treatment involves recovering the patients’ own [autologous] stem cells and then injecting the stem cells into cartilage to stimulate the regeneration of lost tissue. Scaffolding Advances to Lead to Better Stem Cell Treatments

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego and the University of Sheffield have worked together to find a way to improve stem cell scaffolding through sticky spots scattered throughout the extra-cellular matrix. The improvement in scaffolding will lead to better stem cell treatments in many areas. Right now, scaffolds are being used in tandem with stem cells to grow new tracheas, teeth, cartilage, organs and much more.
